Why We Need to Learn to Unlearn

I worked as a temporary administrative assistant during a time of transition from the wonders of the electronic typewriter to the first Wang computers to the Macs and PCs. Every time I was comfortable with a software system, I had to adjust to major changes. Other technologies like smartphones and social media have totally changed the way we manage life.

I have met people who resist change. Bosses and co-workers do not want to learn to use new technology, even if it is beneficial. Office workers do not want to update their software. Added to that is the barrage of false information we have to process every day.

Some are stubborn and cling to their beliefs for dear life even though there is evidence they may be wrong. They may be emotionally invested in holding on to their way of thinking. The problem is that we need to let go of information that no longer serves us and be willing to adapt if we are to survive in this world.

Here are some reasons we should be willing to unlearn some things that may be holding us back.

  • We live in a digital age and must keep up with ever-changing technology to function in the workplace and be able to communicate with others.
  • Outdated cultural and social norms and beliefs are being challenged and updated, and we need to understand them to keep up.
