Why Some Televangelism Will Not Work in the Future

Here are some reasons why televangelists need to change to attract new generations.

Every once in a while, I check out the Christian shows that are out there. These programs are either focussing on biblical teachings or drawing people to Christ. Some can be engaging, but some seem totally out of touch with conditions in today’s world. While their content is still relevant, their presentation styles may turn off the generations that came after the boomers.

Here are some of the issues I see:

Being stuck in the past

I recently heard a senior lady evangelist talk about women “wasting time all day watching soap operas.” Being — ahem — of a certain age myself, I remember when people obsessed with soap operas 30 or more years ago.

Other televangelists talk about their wonderful childhoods where everyone had mommies and daddies who loved on them. They had friendly neighbors and safe neighborhoods. Their families went to church every Sunday. Many presenters also reference many years of being in ministry.

Our world does not look like that anymore. I wish it would in some ways. I myself had divorced parents who never attended church. I have a hard time relating to a world that no longer exists for many people.
