Why Grudges Are Harmful

A grudge is bitterness that is targeted at one person. We may not even be aware that we have a grudge against someone.

Grudges are often ignored and stuffed deep down and only surface when we are reminded of the person and what happened to us. We may dislike someone and not understand why.

Here are some signs we have a grudge against someone:

  • An intense dislike that grows into hatred
  • Being triggered to anger when seeing them or being reminded of offenses
  • Being afraid of being hurt again
  • Feeling vulnerable around them
  • Feeling sad at the loss the offender caused
  • Avoiding the person
  • A desire to take revenge on the person

Dealing With Our Grudges

There are several ways we can handle our grudges.

Examine our feelings
We need to take the time to analyze the source of our negative feelings towards those who trigger us. We may need to pray that God will open our eyes to understanding what is really going on.
