The Problems in Movies about Jesus or the Bible

Why I have a problem with how Jesus and biblically-based characters are depicted in some movies.

I do get excited when a movie or series about Jesus or characters from the Bible. Depictions of biblical times are fascinating and educational but sometimes fail in some areas. Here are the main things I think could be improved.

The movies lack a sense humor

From what I see onscreen, everyone in biblical times was serious and somber. No one cracks a smile, let alone looks happy. I remember the movie The Bible had a bunch of sourpusses whose lives were a depressing beige and grey.

These depictions show faith as being boring and lackluster and will not attract followers to Christianity. Does God have a sense of humor? He certainly did when he created the platypus and other bizarre creatures.

The Bible says there is a time to laugh for all of us (Ecclesiastes 3:4). Unfortunately, that time is not in these movies.

Adding characters and content that are not in the Bible

It bugs me when movie screenwriters add characters that are not in the biblical narrative. For example, I do love the Cecil B. DeMille epic The Ten Commandments, and the parting of the Red Sea is so…
