I have run into this problem on other sites similar to Medium. I even had an editor change a title to something that meant the opposite of what I intended! The way I look at it, an article that is published under my name and should reflect my voice and style, not someone else's content.

I think you did all you could to accommodate the editor. If editors want something different, they should write their own article under their own name.
