We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.
2 Corinthians 10:5

Our human nature lets thoughts flow into our brains freely, both good and bad. We think about our desires, but once we allow the Holy Spirit to govern us, we have life and peace (Romans 8:5–6).

Taking our thoughts captive is challenging because we must resist conforming to the pattern of this world. Our minds must be renewed (Romans 12:2).

How To Take Our Thoughts Captive

Prayer
God wants us to come to Him with our struggles. If we seek righteousness, our prayers are powerful and effective (James 5:16). We can ask God to guard our minds and keep them focused on His truth (Philippians 4:6–7, 1 Peter 5:7).

Praying for our enemies helps us to overcome negative thoughts about others (Philippians 4:6–7, 1 Peter 5:7). We can also ask people to pray for us like Paul did (Romans 15:30, Philippians 1:19).

Being self-aware
We must carefully consider the paths we take in life and stick to them (Proverbs 4:26, 14:8, Colossians 3:1–2). Time should be set aside to challenge our thinking and plan strategies to deal with it.
