How to Deal with Selfish People

Some Biblical insights into how Christians can minimize the damage selfish people can do.

One bright summer day, I was shuffling across a coffee shop parking lot when I heard a loud car horn. A middle-aged man poked his head out of the window of his waiting car and yelled at me. “Can you move any slower?” I was too shocked to say anything in response. I tried to hurry a bit but was so tired I felt like a zombie from the Land of the Living Dead that day.

As I entered the mall, I knew I would probably be meeting more aggravating, self-centered people. A grocery checkout would be sure to have someone cutting in line or quibbling over their bill. If I accidentally bump into anyone, I might get a dirty look or a nasty word.

As a Christian writer, I see that individuals are becoming more and more selfish these days. We tend to dismiss the self-centered words and actions of others as minor irritations, but we should not underestimate the emotional and physical damage that selfish people can do. Christians need to recognize the signs of selfishness and deal with them in a Christian way.
