How to Deal With Blame-Shifters

As a child, I believed that I deserved the tirades and physical punishments my parents inflicted on me. Clearly, there was something wrong with me. I must be as stupid as they said. When my mother accused me of being rude, I believed it despite knowing it was not my intention. It took many years to realize that my parents used blame as an excuse for their verbally and physically abusive behavior.

Many years ago, comedian Flip Wilson became famous for the phrase, “The devil made me do it.” Some people not only blame Satan, but they also blame God for their circumstances.

Reasons Why Individuals Blame Others

They do not want others to examine their actions

When confronted, some people deflect to take the attention away from them and put it on someone else. They will change the subject.

They want to cover up their or other people’s transgressions

These people are often afraid of facing the consequences of their actions.

Refusing to be held accountable

Avoid responsibility
